Film, TV & Radio

I have worked as historical consultant on many projects for BBC TV and radio, including:

The Living and the Dead
A drama series set in the 1890s, exploring the paranormal and the subconscious - with a strong focus on female roles (as photographers, teachers, readers), and Pre-Raphaelite imagery.

I am also the historical consultant for films including
The Invisible Woman : directed by Ralph Fiennes, who also played Charles Dickens

This film revealed the relationship between Dickens and his lover, the actress Ellen Ternan. I worked closely with Fiennes on the script, and with the set designers to create a multi-layered historical context for the story.

I have also worked as a contributor and consultant for Channel 4 and the BBC TV and Radio:
including Radio 4 'Woman's Hour', Radio 3 'Free Thinking' and Proms interval talks, and 'Time Team'.
